PLN has been around for a long time through human relationship, literature and media. As time evolves, so has the need for more advanced PLN. The author specified three types of PLNs:
  • Personally maintained synchronous connections- this include the traditional ways of receiving information as well as the more recent ones where technology is required such as twitter, skype, text messaging.
  • Personally and socially maintained semisynchronous connections- this type of connection ‘real time’ interaction is not compulsory in order to receive information from experts. Information can be sent and received at a convenient time for users. Wikis, twitter and facebook are some examples.
  • Dynamically maintained asynchronous connections-instead of relying on experts to relay information, this type of connection relays on software. This require searching the internet for information about a given topic, and receiving information about it.
The author ends by saying that with everything has its advantages and disadvantages. A disadvantage of PLN is that there may be personal bias when comes to selecting and giving information as we they may lean towards sources which they agree with.

  • Dynamically maintained.. Asynchronous( The first 2 types of PLNS connect us with each other but this type more often connects us with valuable content sources) eg Diigo

As teachers we should be reminded that we are lifelong learners. We owe our students the responsibility of carrying out our duties to the best of our ability. This means that we cannot always depend on our self. Growing your personal development network will certainly help accomplish this mission.
